CNC milling is one of the most popular CNC machining processes. Milling includes the technical method of both drilling and cutting processes. CNC milling uses a rotating cylindrical cutting tool to drill the material.

Following are info about CNC Milling Machine in detail:

  1. Control panel:Control panel is the brain of a CNC milling machine.
    The machinist/controller feeds the G-code (required dimensions) using the keyboard which, in turn, instructs the axis motors to move the cutters and other components.
  2. Table:The table is used to hold the workpiece stationary for the entirety of the milling process. The workpiece is fit to the metal/wooden/plastic table using T-slots and metal clamps.
  3. Column: The columns run along the axis to give a backbone to the milling part.
  4. Cutting tool:A cuttingCNC machine tool is attached to the column. It moves across the axis to give the desired shape to the CNC machined parts.
  5. Frame:As the name suggests, the frame gives sturdy support to the machine, providing them with maximum rigidity to withstand cutting forces. It is mainly built using cast iron.
  6. Axes:The axes in a CNC milling machine allows cutting tool/workpiece to move around obtain the maximum possible precision.
  7. Spindle:The spindle consists of a rotating assembly that holds the cutting tool and a motor that runs the entire work piece.
  8. Coolant supply tube:The coolant supply tubes are used to cool down the rapidly heating metal workpiece and to lubricate the cutting tool for smooth movement.

There are two types of CNC milling machines available with respect to its working- Vertical and Horizontal- with the major difference being in their spindle placement.

  1. Vertical CNC Mills
    Vertical CNC milling machines have a vertical spindle axis. In this machine type, the cutters are placed vertically in the spindle and are able to make drilling or plunge cuts.

Popular examples of Vertical CNC mills include Bed mills and Turret mills.

  1. Horizontal CNC Mills
    In horizontal CNC milling machines, the cutters are placed horizontally on an arbor.

What is Quality Control

Introduction of Quality Control Process

Quality control (QC) is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in production. ISO 9000:2015 defines quality control as “A part of quality management focused on fulfilling quality requirements”.

This approach places an emphasis on three aspects (enshrined in standards such as ISO 9001:2015). Inspection is a major component of quality control, where physical product is examined visually (or the end results of a service are analyzed).

Product inspectors will be provided with lists and descriptions of unacceptable product’s defects such as cracks or surface blemishes for example.

Blasting

Blasting

Blasting is a method applying grit to a surface, using pressurized air to jet certain blast media. This creates a gritty and sandy finish, widely seen on tech products like smartphones, notebooks and instruments.

Some refer to this method as Sand-blasting. Meanwhile, Glass bead blasting, or Bead-blasting, is done using small glass beads for the purpose.

Blasting Systems

A blasting system requires air compressor, a container for the beads or blast media, and a nozzle to aim. The air compressor push air into hose at certain pressure level. Because of the smaller size, beads typically require greater pressure.

The nozzle directs the jet-like stream that can be effectively aimed at specific locations or surfaces. Blasting must be done in a tightly contained area to avoid injury and damage to environment.

Introduction of Plastic Injection

Plastic Injection machines uses a huge screw to drive molten raw plastic material into the mold gate with a high pressure.

The high pressure is needed to ensure that the plastic resin fills in each empty cavity. When the molten plastic parts are cool down via cooling water, the mold platen will open, and the part is ejected or we can also call the parts fallen down from the mold.

Designing an injection molding is complicated, and the cost of the molds themselves are expensive. However, the unit price will be lower once you do mass production for large volume of the parts.

How the Plastic Injection Process Works

  1. Plastic pellets (usually thermoplastics like ABS, PP, or PC) are fed into a hopper.

  2. The material is heated and melted inside a heated barrel.

  3. screw or plunger pushes the molten plastic into a steel mold cavity under high pressure.

  4. The plastic cools and solidifies inside the mold, taking the shape of the cavity.

  5. The mold opens and ejects the finished part.

  6. The cycle repeats for high-volume production.
