A look into the anodization process

Anodisation Process

As an OEM/custom machined metal parts manufacturer, Unison Tek is not just experienced in the turning and milling process, but also have had affiliated companies who can take care of different surface treatments for us – anodisation.

For example, it is a process that’s being heavily used on our machined parts.

What is anodisation?

Anodizing is an electrolyticpassivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxidelayer on the surface of metal parts.

The process is called anodizing because the part to be treated forms the anode electrode of an electrolytic cell. Anodizing increases resistance to corrosion and wear, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than bare metal does.

Anodic films can also be used for a number of cosmetic effects, either with thick porous coatings that can absorb dyes or with thin transparent coatings that add interference effects to reflected light.

Types of anodising

1) Chromic Acid Anodising

Rarely used, but suitable for castings and in situations where a reduction in fatigue strength is not acceptable. Film thicknesses are the thinnest of the three common processes. However, it’s not ideal for when coloring is needed.

2) Sulphuric Acid Anodising

Used in a variety of occations. A range of oxide layer thicknesses can be achieved as can effective colouring, most commonly achieved by the application of a secondary colouring treatment.

Film thicknesses in aluminium are in the range of 5-25 Microns, with 10-15 required for effective colouring using dyes. Coating thicknesses in titanium are significantly less, being in the range of 0.1-0.3Microns.

3) Hard Anodising

Hard Anodising is ultimately is the thickest form of anodising, creating an oxide layer which is between 20-100 Microns thick, depending on the base alloy being treated.

It offers the highest increases in hardness, wear resistance and electrical resistance and is primarily a functional coating.

It is also performed in a sulfuric acid solution, but with higher acid concentration, low temperature and a higher voltage applied.

Case Study: Issues we ran into when anodizing:

-Fixation for anodisation/ jigging marks: It’s prone to corrosion and bruises.

-Blind holes: Electrolyte will not able to get into the blind holes, thus creating uneven appearances.

-Insufficient packaging/ impact while shipping the goods is likely to create marks.

Preventative measures:

  • -Reinforce inspection equipment: anodisation thickness testers, durometers,
    salt spray test machine
  • -Tapes applied to mask the area while anodising
  • -Reinfoce packaging sufficiency

Benefits of Anodizing

  • Corrosion resistance: Protects the metal from moisture and chemicals.
  • Wear resistance: Increases surface hardness.
  • Aesthetic finish: Allows for a matte or colored appearance.
  • Environmentally friendly: No heavy metals or toxic by-products.
  • Stable surface: Will not peel or chip like paint or plating.

Have you ever wondered how parts can fit so well together into a watch, or a smartphone? The key to a good assembly is in the engineering tolerance. Let’s see the tolerance.

Tolerance is defining a range on a dimension or spec that can be allowed. Even using the most precise CNC machine, there will be slight deviations during production.

Creating the tolerance requires in depth knowledge of processing of how the parts inside a system is fitted together.

A very tight tolerance requires precise machines and experienced personnel, and the defect rate could go up, so the pricing will go up as well, and vice versa.

BILATERAL TOLERANCE

When the tolerannce allows both plus and minus range.

UNILATERAL TOLERANCE

When the tolerance only allows either plus or minus number. Aside from geometric tolerance, there are also tolerance for temperature, hardness, pressure… etc.

Types of Grinding

Grinding

There are many forms of grinding, but the four major industrial grinding processes are:

•Cylindrical grinding

A cylindrical grinder is used for shaping the outside of a workpiece. These machines accept workpieces in a variety of shapes as long as they can be rotated through a central axis.

In a cylindrical grinder, both the workpiece and grinding wheel are simultaneously rotated. Outside diameter grinders, internal diameter grinders, and centerless grinders are all types of cylindrical grinders.

•Internal grinding

Internal grinding is used to grind the internal diameter of the workpiece. Tapered holes can be ground with the use of internal grinders that can swivel on the horizontal.

•Centerless grinding

Centerless grinding is when the workpiece is supported by a blade instead of by centers or chucks. Two wheels are used. The larger one is used to grind the surface of the workpiece and the smaller wheel is used to regulate the axial movement of the workpiece.

Types of centerless grinding include through-feed grinding, in-feed/plunge grinding, and internal centerless grinding.

•Surface grinding

Surface grinding uses a rotating abrasive wheel to remove material, creating a flat surface. How to read the “ANSI tables”, aka “AQL tables”

Source: Mil-Std 105E, replaced by commercial standards:

ISO2859, ANSI/ASQ Z1.4-2003, NF06-022, BS 6001, DIN 40080.

Random Sampling

¤  100% inspection can consume a lot of time, or destructive.

¤  How many should you check?

¤  Follow statistics rather than a fixed percentage

¤  Widely used settings:

¤  Normal severity

¤  Level II

Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL)

¤  How do you decide if the batch is accepted or rejected?

¤  The buyer and the supplier should agree on AQLs.

¤  Widely used settings for consumer goods in China:

¤  0% for critical defects (totally unacceptable: a user might get harmed, or regulations are not respected).

¤  2.5% for major defects (these products would usually not be considered acceptable by the end user).

¤  4.0% for minor defects (there is some departure from specifications, but most users would not mind it).

¤  Order size: 40,000 pcs of memory sticks, to be made in 1 batch by the supplier.

¤  Single sampling plan.

¤  Normal severity, level II.

¤  AQLs: critical 0, major 1.5%, minor 4.0%.

¤  The ISO2859-1 standard says:

¤  If this procedure leads to different sample sizes for different classes of nonconformities or nonconforming items, the sample size code letter corresponding to the largest sample size derived may be used for all classes of nonconformities or nonconforming items, when designated or approved by the responsible authority.

Conclusion (for Single Plan)

¤  Your code letter is “N”, so you will have to draw 500 pcs randomly from the total lot size.

¤  Here are the limits: the products are accepted if NO critical defects, and NO MORE than 14 major defects, and NO MORE than 21 minor defects are found.

¤  Examples: 

¤  If you find 0 critical defect, 17 major defects and 12 minor defects, the products are rejected. 

¤  If you find 0 critical defect, 10 major defects and 21 minor defects, the products are accepted.

Liquid nitrogen frozen deflashing machine proves to be working well when deflashing the parts, especially for plastic material. It’s a process using liquid nitrogen to freeze processing objects (temperature to be 180 degrees Celsius below zero).

By doing so, the objects will become hard and brittle. Then, we can use plastic sanding material for blasting, in order to reach complete deflashing.

The perks of applying this procedure are numerous. It’s cost-efficient, labour-saving, and unlike traditional deflashing process, it generates productivity and decrease the chance of defect rate.

It’s suitable to put to use for plastic material, rubber, die cast, aluminum alloy, to name just a few.

The sanding material is made from plastic, which can further avoid damaging the surface.
